COMMENTARY
NOTES CONCERNING HUDSON HILL'S MAP
THE AREA FROM CHENEY RAVINE TO GEARY POINT
MAP POINTS
Map Point 1 - Hudson Hill lands heavily in the
ruins of the centre barracks known as the Enlisted Men's Married
Quarters. The area immediately east of this building is the
eastern rim of Cheney Ravine, and is being raked with
Japanese MG fire from nearby points between the high ground at
Wheeler Battery and along the track to Cheney Battery;
Map Point 2 - The area east
of the EM Married Qtrs is caught in a crossfire from higher
ground to the south and east. East of the beltline road, many of
the troopers who have fallen short of the landing zone are KIA,
MIA or WIA; A stick of men from E Company's 60mm Mortar Platoon,
under SSgt Edward Gulsvick has fallen short in this area, and
almost all are killed. A number of men are sheltering in
this three-building area, making it a strong point from which
some can venture down into Cheney Ravine and recover any wounded
troopers. They will be pinned down for 90 minutes until 75mm
fire can be arranged from Topside.
Map Point 3 - High Ground
at Wheeler Pt. From here, the Japanese can lay fire to the
areas to the east of the beltline road;
Map Point 4 - There is
another concentration of fire coming from along the track
between Wheeler Battery and Cheney Battery; At one point,
fourteen Japanese venture down into this area to bayonet injured
troopers. They are driven off in a fusillade.
Map Point 5 - Fortified
Cave
In all, E company's jump
will lose them the lives or services of 1 officer and 37 EM's. |
