Getting used to Australian customs sometimes called for strenuous physical effort. On an occasion, in a bar in Gordonvale, Maxie finished a glass of beer before I did so he turned his glass upside down and sat it on the bar, indicating (or so he thought) that he did not want any more.
We were unaware that this action meant something different to the Aussies who were seated at the bar, to whom it meant “I am ready to challenge anyone in the Bar to a fight.”
