a.k.a. Finschafen, Finschaven, Finschhafen |
FINSCHAFEN, North East New Guinea
|
At the tip of
the Huon Peninsula, the Japanese occupied the area, a Lutheran
Mission, in March 1942 as part of the forward protection of their
base at Lae.
After being
retaken by Australian troops in October 1943, the area was built
into Base "F," a major staging area for American forces. It
would be eclipsed by Base "G" - Hollandia.
