It
was perhaps just as well that the Americans and Filipinos who crowded
into Bataan and took their positions behind the lines already
established did not know how serious was the Allied position in the Far
East and how remote were their chances for relief. Ahead of them were
long, dreary months of starvation and hard fighting before they would be
herded into prison camps. At least they could hope that help was on the
way. Only General MacArthur and his immediate staff knew the worst.
