Although the Japanese had sought initially to obtain at least a grudging co-operation of the Filipinos in their Co-Prosperity Sphere, by 1943 the brutal  nature of their occupation had been well revealed. It was not surprising that, with their impending defeat, the Filipinos took retribution.
