A rifle should not be carried over the shoulder, but across the body, otherwise the opening shock of the parachute was likely to wrench the arm down and away, and the rifle would  be lost. Neither was it desirable to face the barrel down towards the ground, for obvious reasons.

Sometimes, even a .45 pistol could be wrenched from a holster  by the opening shock. Weapons were best tied in tight.
