PANAMA CANAL - Laid down as a WWI liberty ship,
the USAT St. Mihiel was launched in 1920 and operated as an army
transport from 1922 until mid-1940. She was then transferred to
the USN, and was commissioned as USS St. Mihiel. In
November 1943 she was retransferred to the Army, and was used as
a hospital ship. |
