RELAXING ON GREEN ISLAND 1943 - Green Island is a small (15 hectare/37 acres) island 27 km (45 minutes) by a fast boat from Cairns, its beaches recognized as amongst the best in Far North Queensland and (now) a premier world heritage site. It is noted for its rainforest cover,  its pure coral sands, and its excellent snorkeling over the outlying reefs. In short, it was everything good that you could imagine of a tropical island, though without the hula girls. Unfortunately, the tropical areas with which the 503d was to become accustomed would share little of the charms of Green Island.
