POSSIBLY TOWNSVILLE

The ship put into Townsville for a few hours and then proceeded to Cairns, to the great joy of many who expected to soon be with loved ones and friends at Gordonvale; however, as the ship docked, the announcement was made that the ship would only be there a few hours, and no one except authorized personnel would be allowed to go ashore. Guards were posted at the gang planks and even at the hawsers mooring the ship to the dock. Even so, a few made it ashore. They were not above dropping into the water on the bay side and swimming.
