I don't much recall my first meeting with Al McGrew, because once I had, it soon seemed that I'd known him most of my life. I do recall seeing him sitting quietly amidst the sharp green grass overgrowing the ruins of what was once Battery Ramsay, Corregidor. What was he thinking, all these years after? What brought him back to Corregidor, year after year, to commune with ghosts?

I  learned that he was recharging his batteries.

In a way, we all know Al. He's the skinny, naive country kid who left home in the pursuit of friendship and the road to adventure, and found instead Dai Toa Senso, Japan's Great Pacific War. Yet with the rising and falling of Colonial and Imperial empires around him, Al emerged from his POW years a peculiar amalgam of strengths and weakness. Nietzsche said that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, and Al's memories of all those years ago are clearer than what he did yesterday, and we are all the better for it.  So he makes US stronger.

We don't own history, we only hold it in trust for our children. Good people who experience, achieve and survive something extraordinary, when others have not, voluntarily shoulder certain obligations upon themselves, not just for society, but also for those of their contemporaries who did not survive. One of the more poignant obligations of their survival is to relate the experience, on behalf of those who did not. The knowledge of surviving veterans, whose time is shortly upon them, is a living treasure. Their memories,  but our treasure.

Our obligation, as the generation that follows them, is to record and regard their human experiences, their humanity, while they are still with us. These fragments are our treasures in trust, valuable only when we can refresh their experience by passing them along.  So-called historians will come along a hundred years after us, and tell us what our history was. Yet only those of us who can sit with the veterans in their parlour, and who listen closely, can recall their humanity.

Sit now, in comfort, and listen to  a true Survivor.

Q & A

Q: What happened to the Standard landscape Version?   A: It's been "retired",  being replaced by the large landscape (coffee-table) version.  The large landscape version brings more and larger pages, which means more and larger images of Al McGrew's Corregidor.  If you are going to spend a kings randsom on a book, we do our best.

Q: Why are these books so expensive?

A: That's the nature of print-on-demand books.   You want one book, they print it specially for you. Just one copy. You're a rare individual, it's a RARE BOOK!

Q: What's with the POCKET EDITION?    A: I have priced the basic product at under TWENTY BUCKS, so you can get to get to know Al's remarkale story  without blowing your budget. The economy edition is a black & white printing only, with a flexible, high-gloss laminated soft cover. There are two other full-color text editions, one with a linen cover + full-color glossy dust jacket, and the other a hardcover ImageWrap where the cover design is printed  matt on the cover itself.

Q: What is the price of other editions?
A: It depends on the edition -  Hardcover with Dust Jacket, and Hardcover with ImageWrap.  There's also an eBook. The prices are on the preview page.

Q: Can I see a preview?
A: Sure, I don't expect you to judge the book by its cover. Each  edition has a PREVIEW link.

Q: Are there discount vouchers or  promo coupons available to lower the price?   A: Yes, but you have to look for them. I suggest you Google the words "Blurb.com,  Discount, Coupon, Promo" and the current month.  Sometimes you can score between 10% and 35% depending on how much they need their cash-flow in San Francisco.

Q: If I join Blurb.com, do I get a membership discount?   A: No. The discount on "your first book" is only for books you have published.  You've still got to look for coupons.

Q: Is it available on Amazon?   A: Even if you have free delivery from Amazon, it's cheaper to buy it direct from Blurb. So the answer is "No."  Isn't Jeff Bezos rich enough?

Q: Is it available on Apple?   A: Apple requires that page numbers be removed from the eBooks they sell through their iBooks Store. I have a "thing" about page numbers. I like 'em. So the answer is "No."

Q:  Can I get an eBook Version?   Yes,  The fixed-layout eBook download is available for the Apple iPad, Amazon Kindle Fire, Android devices and Mac or PC computers for a measly ten bucks. See ePREVIEW

Q: How do I buy it?    The "BUY" cart is on the preview page.
