1 - 7 JULY 1945

1 July 1945

"Inspection by task force commander. 1 POW brought in by Guriellas (sic). Password Lazy Lady."

2 July 1945

PHASE X

Announcement made in the Daily bulletin to the effect that Congressional Medal of Honor has been awarded to Sgt. Ray Eubanks, 6938957, formerly of Co "D" 503d Prcht. Inf. for action at Noemfoor Island (posthumous). Pvt. Lloyd G. McCarter, 2094, formerly Co. "F" 503d Prcht. Inf. for action on Corregidor."

"7-2-45 1 platt. to Dianay by rail car. returned 2000 hr. No activity.

"First Lt. Bailey releived of command & Capt. Willaim LaVanchure appointed new company commander."

Bailey did not deserve this. He should have been promoted to Captain seven months before, but he was not Panama. That is all I will say.

3 July 1945

"Nil activity."

"Company less second platoon moved to Hacienda Florencia at coordinates Appr (128-1315). Map 1-50,000 Victorias River sheet."                             .

I find no such coordinates (12.8-13.15) on the Victorias River map I have, nor do I remember such a place, but I may have been on a trip to Dumaguete.

Official Documents Collection - Transcript of General Orders No. 18

4 July 1945

"No patrols, Co. took part in 4th July celebration put on by citizens of Fabrica."
"Lt Mathers with one squad left on motor patrol at 1300 hr. to San Isidro to investigate report of 8 Japs in that area. Found no evidence of enemy. The patrol brought back one Filipino that had been wounded by the Japanese. Informal inspection by  "End of entry.

I was gone at this time to Dumaguete. I do not remember why I was sent there, but about three of us made the trip by jeep, and we were gone several days.

5 July 1945

PHASE X

"0800- Civilian sugar inspectors left."

After leaving us, the two agricultural experts had gone on to inspect other places. Now they left Negros.

"7-5-45 Patrols by railcar to Santiago. Nil activity. One collabarator turned over by civilians, Capt. Batiste. A filipinio, picked up at Cadiz for questioning."

"Company patrol of 306 men left at 0800 hr to investigate report of enemy at San Isidro, San Jose, Bashren area. Patrol to stay overnight. No report at end of period. Civilians turned over 1 enemy civilian & 3 soldiers that had captured near San Isidro. All surrendered voluntarily."

Obviously a company patrol would not number 306 men.
It must have been 30 or 36 men.

6 July 1945

"Motorized patrols, nil activity."

7 July 1945

"At 0730 the Co. with attch. MG moved appr. six miles S of Fabrica on logging train and stopped at Bn. CP. While stopped at the Bn CP at the Dian-Ay Bridge, a B-24 dropped a stick of bombs across the area and Sgt Keller, Cpl Burnett, and Pvts. Emery, Lewis, and Howe slightly wounded. The Co. moved about 5 mi S of The Bn CP and set up a perimeter. At 1300 the CO, Lt. Gifford, and the 1st squad of the 1st plt. left on a security patrol around the Co. perimeter. No enemy were contacted. At 1300 the 3d plt, Lt Watkins, moved west to find a possible crossing place on the Himaagan River. The patrol returned at, 1730 and reported a possible crossing SW---"

I believe the company is off on their dates here. The 2d Battalion Journal gives the bombing mishap as 13 July. The "F" Company History also gives it as 13 July. At this date the 2d Battalion the battalion was not gathered at Fabrica with the exception of "E" Company as far as I can determine. The "F" Company History states that the company readied to move to Fabrica 9 July. The 8 July entry of the Regimental History states that the 2d Battalion had moved to Fabrica, but I think they are wrong.
