Don became the Commanding Officer of the 462d Parachute Field Artillery Bn.,  which was activated 15 June 1943 at Camp Mackall, N.C.  The 462nd P. F. A. Bn. was attached to the 503d PIR on 29 March 1944,   becoming a component part of the 503d Parachute Regimental Combat Team.
