TAKING TEN

.
The Aussie troops called it "Smoko" and taught us  the art of bringing water to the boil and making tea - anywhere - and within 10 minutes.  Tea making was a fundamental, and extraordinary bit  of Aussie bush-craft. We came to appreciate it, even over coffee.

We could have our tea ready to drink, and be ready to move off within ten minutes.

Even in the deepest jungle, we carried our Aussie-style 'tin billy', a thin tin pot, ideal for heating water. Once brought to the boil, the tea leaves would be tipped in. To separate the tea leaves, the billy would be swung around, and the centrifugal forces would force the leaves to the bottom of the 'billy'.  The tea could then be poured into a cup, and sipped while walking.

The 'billy' became a part of 503d unofficial kit.

This photograph is not an actual combat patrol - we are too close together. There is no sense of the possibility of being observed. ...
