THE TOKAIDO ROAD
-
it was
a hard slog up from the coast - which can be seen through
the smoke which covers the sugar-cane fields which lay
between the coast and the foothills. With the return of the
US, the fields, which have laid fallow during the war, are
being cleared again ready for planting. Every
ridge was fought for, by frontal attack, against well dug-in
positions, and troops well armed with automatic weapons of
all sizes. Particularly dangerous were the .50's which the
Japanese had taken from wrecked aircraft. There was no
shortage of them. There were several miles more to go, and
this break was only for the moment.
