On
17 February
when the 1st platoon assaulted Battery
Wheeler, the magazines blew up that night while the platoon occupied
the great battery.
"When the powder and ammo blew up that night, a huge
column of fire curled upward and seemed to turn toward on the seaside edge
of the parapet. We dove over the edge and down - huddling there feeling
completely exposed until the flames died down. It was during this period
when Combs suffered the broken leg and DeLane was killed."
John Mara, Assistant platoon leader,
1st Platoon, 'D' Coy
