George Roberts died on the night of Feb. 21/22,  1945. About 10a.m.,  we were moving down a path toward what we thought was a mine storage cave. We were in a single file. After several men had passed a certain point and apparently missed the mine actuator George triggered it. His leg was blown off about halfway to his knee. His other leg was bleeding profusely, too. Two aid men reached him quickly but couldn’t control the bleeding. George Roberts died that night in an aid station on Topside. …
