On August 24, both MacArthur
and Kenney arrived at Port Moresby to be present for the final
stages of the planning and for the execution of the operation. This
photo well illustrates how Lt. Col. John J. Tolson III became known
as "Smiling Jack." Tolson stayed in the military, commanded the
First Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam, and virually wrote
the book on the use of helicopters as a leading instrument of modern
warfare. He retired as a Lieut. General and died in 1991, aged 76.
