START OF NUMFOR MISSION

 

Company enplaned at 0605 hr..take off at 0640hr..three hour and twenty five minute ride brought the company over Kamiri Strip and our jump was made at 1005 hr from an altit ude of 350 ft.  The jump field was no field at all but a shell pooked coral strip strewn with wrecked Jap equipment, blasted stumps and US trucks and Aligatros of the initial landing force.    Casualities on the drop..seven men..Davis received compound fracture of leg..others sprains and pulled muscles.  Company set up defensive position about Kamiri Strip as part of Reg. defense..  C company on right flank covering 400 yds.

 

5 July 44

3d Platoon sent by landing barge to Manim Island..captured island in face of light resistence..Pvt Corley shot through the face  no other casualties  8 Japs killed..one Lmg captured one pillbox destroyed.

 

11 July 44

12 Japs killed by patrol which went out 9 July..no casualties..passwords Linger Longer..Silly Tilly..Elenor Powel  all with L�s to trip up the Jap.

 

13 July 44

Company starts up to Hill 670 to aid C company ambused and pinned down by main body of Japs who had fled inland on D Day..estimated strength later confirmed 1800 Jap Infantry plus labor troops of Formosans and Javanese.

 

14 July 24

Company sets up perimeter defenes of Hill 670   at part of Bn Patroling and reconoitering continuous for Japs killed during this time.  Company reaced Namber Drome on the 24 July�Worn to a frazzle and dead beat�water and food had been slim..water vines and rain plus K rations carriedup the hill by Japs, plus some rationsdroppedby plane had carried us through..one man hit on the head by ration box   luckly not killed

 

28 July 44

Company leaves Namber Strip for native village of Manoquari on SE coast of island.  Camp set up and defensive perimeter wet up around the village.  One section 81mm mortors plus four LMGS attached to the company.  Active patroling started which is to last.

 

21 August 44

Company leaves Manoquari for Namer Drom.  Stay at Manoquari had been excellent training for greater things to come.  Continuous combat patrols had netted 13 Japs captured, 54 killed.  Qwn  casualities Pvt Dundas killed, Pvt Lanier killed 4 wounded.
