Weldon Hester had a reputation of serving coffee within an hour on a beachhead, and he was not about to treat Corregidor any differently. |

Charles H. Bradford was a surgeon with the 2nd Bn 503d PIR, having joined them in Australia. Originally from Boston, erudite and well travelled, he brought a sensibility to the tough job of being a combat surgeon. When not operating, he accompanied patrols, establishing a repute that wherever you might be on Corregidor, "Doc Bradford" was not far away. In the evenings he took to writing a manuscript, a tribute of sorts to the men he was serving with. He completed it post-war. His manuscript was handed around privately between members of the PRCT, more or less an insider's secret. It was used as the basis of each and every of the books about Corregidor, though Bradford insisted his authorship remained anonymous. Upon his passing, and with the assistance of Charkie's friends, Don Abbott and John Lindgren, I secured the permission of his estate to have the manuscript published under his name. I approached commercial publishers, but they passed on it because it was "too short." I did not want to detract from Doc's content or style, so took on the role myself.
When the 503d PRCT returned to Mindoro, photographs had been taken of all
those returning from Corregidor. These images, known as "The States
Photographs", are included in the book, reproduced from the original
negatives courtesy of Fred Hill.

Each year we have a get-together on Corregidor where we can indulge in our mutual interests. It's not an organised tour, just a bunch of people "as crazy as we are" coming together for two weeks of discovery. The big news of the 2001 trip is the finding of the WWII Parachute Canopy. We've met every year since 1999 but it's been difficult to write a series of articles....and 2001 was especially important because of the canopy... |
